Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tiles are a popular choice of flooring due to their aesthetic appeal, as well as their durability and easy care. A properly installed ceramic tile floor will outperform and outlast nearly any other floor covering product created for the same application. Glazed ceramic tile resists stains, odors and dirt and can be cleaned with a damp mop or common household cleaners.
If I drop something, is it going to crack the ceramic tile?
It depends. With proper installation, ceramic tile is very durable. If you drop a glass or dish, the glass or dish will most likely break, while the tile may chip or crack.
I'd like to install ceramic tile in my home, but won't it be cold?
Not necessarily. Porcelain tile is no different in temperature than anything else in the room except that it holds its temperature better because of its mass. Of course, cool is good in warm weather climates and it's easy to warm things up with an area rug or two.
What is the difference between glazed and un-glazed tiles?
Glazed tiles are made the same as unglazed except that a glass wear layer called a glaze is fused to its' surface by means of tremendous heat. The glaze provides an unlimited array of colors and designs. The glaze also protects the tile from staining. Unglazed tiles are true inlays. Unglazed tiles are very similar to glazed tile, except that their surface is not coated. Unglazed ceramic tiles do not show wear because their color extends throughout the tile, making them ideal for commercial applications.
What's a good fit for ceramic tile?
Ceramic tile is a good fit in bathrooms or other moisture-rich environments. It's easy to clean and install, it's waterproof, sturdy, and is a great value for the price. Designers also like ceramic tile because its surface is ideal for paint or decal ornamentation.
Is ceramic tile easy to clean and maintain?
Yes, but it does need to be maintained. It is not maintenance free. General day-to-day cleaning requires only sweeping or vacuuming to remove loose soil or debris, then damp mopping with clean, warm water. If aggressive cleaning due to heavy contamination is required, it can be accomplished using a mild household cleaner or a commercial cleaner, scrubbing with a nylon pad or brush, followed by a thorough rinse and removal of the cleaning solution.
Is ceramic floor tile slippery?
Any floor, vinyl, hardwood, laminate, or ceramic tile can be slippery if it becomes contaminated with soil, oil, grease, water or other foreign substances. The glossier the floor, the slicker it can be. Unglazed tile or tiles that have an abrasive finish or textured surface areless slippery than bright glazed tile or tiles with a very smooth surface. “Slippery” is defined by the term coefficient of friction. Generally slip-resistant tiles have a COF greater than .60 wet. Just remember to always use caution when stepping out of the shower, cooking with oil, and so on, clean up spills immediately.
